Artist's Comments

I had some more time today to work on this image. Based on the con/crit I've gotten here and on a couple other sites, I decided to widen the canvas a little, mostly in the center. I need to add more details to the foreground to define the shapes down there more, and I haven't done any more work on the otters, but I'm happy with how the background is progressing.

Again, any and all constructive criticism is welcome! Thanks!

I think it's interesting how the sunlight filtering down below the surface almost seems to be pointing the way to the entrance below.

If you let people know that you're human, then they'll expect it of you all of the time.

aww...yay you have been working on it!

more lighting of course, but it's a WIP, so I can't complain yet ;) it's coming along great! lots of depth... :)

The changes you've made really enhance this enormously. Fewer ripples in the water at the top help balance the detail in the rest of the pic so it's not so fussy all over. Sharpening the underwater vegetation and pulling back the focus adds more depth that the first version needed. Now I feel like I'm looking at the scene happening, and not a still, if that makes sense?

I'm sorry I never got back to you with the crit I wanted, but I know you know what life in a new place is like! I finally have things settled down now (and have pushed two laaaaaaate gift fics off my plate *wipes brow*), though.

I'm wondering if you need to increase the area of the bright greenish glow just a bit? There's a lot of green in the rest of the background, and the water above is quite bright as well. I'm not sure what sort of balance you're going for here, though, and whether that spot is supposed to be as much of a focus as I think it is. Hmm. Feel free to disagree, ofc, I'm just not sure what it is about that that's pinging me.

You know this is perfectly laid out for a book cover? :) I've actually been researching otters and putting about with character sketches (the literary kind, not my (in)famous stick figures *snicker*) and names.

Actually, going to Note you on the rest of this convo, hang on... :)

Depth is one thing I tend to have a lot of trouble rendering, so I've really been trying to keep it in mind as I work on this. When you say 'more lighting', what do you mean, exactly? More rays of light filtering down through the water? Or more highlighted areas on the forms? :)
