Moonbeast by Cacodaemonia Moonbeast by Cacodaemonia
Submission for the ArtOrder Lovecraft contest. I went with a moonbeast from H.P. Lovecraft's The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath.

- Anatomically, the thing is like a toad/jellyfish/bird/tentacle-monster hybrid, with some of my greyhound sprinkled in there. He is so great for figuring out anatomy - thanks Stormy! :3

- Moonbeasts have no eyes, but I decided to give them tympanic membranes like frogs and toads have.

- There's a scene in the story where the creatures are paying flutes, in case you're wondering about the presence of a seemingly out of place musical instrument.

- Gross things are awesome and insanely fun to paint. :la:

- Some detail shots.

Corel Painter 11, Photoshop CS5, 2010.

Fascinating design. It looks very different from ordinary creatures, yet still plausible.

Ah, yes, I remember these guys... and I remember that story, about "Kadath in the cold waste". Are you at all familar with Tom Sullivan and Mark J. Ferrari's work? I believe they illustrated a compendium of Lovecraft monsters back around 1988 or so. This image reminds me of some of the stuff from that book... classic! (S. Peterson Field Guide to Cthulhu Monsters)

great representation of the moon beasts. Lovecraft does have this weird thing with monsters playing flutes doesn't he. There are almost elements of star nosed mole to this guy.

I actually haven't read too many of his stories, but my favorite so far is At The Mountains of Madness. You?

Whoa. WHOA.

I might worship you right now. Just sayin'.

I love how it's holding the flute: it's not just mashing it in a fist, you've put thought into having it hold the thing the way someone really might. Also: the tentacles. I've drawn monsters with smooth tentacles coming out of rough skin/scales a couple times, and I can never make it look like the change of texture is natural. But in this you can see the wrinkles smoothing out and it looks awesome.

Hehe The comment made me snicker. This is GREAT! I can understand the love for gross things :giggle:
I love the anatomy. In a weird way it makes sense. The feet and hands look so great and I love the coloring here. The vains on the feet and all this, the pale blue/grey and the red... all very cool and the change over is just awesome. It looks so touchable (even if I wouldn't really WANT to touch it XD )

All I wonder is HOW it plays the flute O.o

Haha, I wondered that about the flute, too! I guess there is a mouth beneath all those tentacles. D:

To be fair, I don't think of all them had descriptions of the creatures' movements available in the source material, but I'm glad it shows movement! Thanks. :)

But that doesn't matter does it? I thought one of the points was to imagine and show how it 'might' move.. which you've done... so take that on the nose and like it!! ;)
