Dragonling by Cacodaemonia Dragonling by Cacodaemonia
EDIT Nov. 23, 2010: Okay, more changes. I got some great critiques from Jon Schindehette, Lars Grant-West, and many others at Illuxcon, and have tried to implement some of their suggestions. I may make more changes in the future. You can see the previous version here.

+++

EDIT Oct. 29, 2010: Thank you guys for all the awesome crits! I've made quite a few changes to this, and I think it's a big improvement. Here's the new painting, and if you want to see the old one you can go here. Special thanks to :icontheechoinside: for the extremely helpful paintover! :love:

+++

This thing is FINALLY (maybe) done. I started it back in May and ignored it over the summer in favor of work, but since Illuxcon is coming up, I need more new portfolio pieces. I decided to ditch the lines, and am very happy I took :icondracothrope:'s suggestion to use Kingfisher-like markings!

I would very much appreciate critiques or suggestions, though, I may not be able to reply to them right away. Thanks! :)

Dat wing! Goodness. I think I've never seen a more "realistic" drake, if realistic is the right word.

THAT IS ONE BEAUTIFUL FISH! You make it look so alive and smooth! The emotion you give it by having the fish meet his fate is just splendid!

This is spectacular. That water is superb, it must've been a bit of a fight, but damn, its great. I love the wet look on the rest of the dragon, and the lighting, guhhhh this whole piece is gorgeous. I love how you've given him that extra skin on his throat and the light is coming through it. Great observation on that. The color's amazing. I'd love to pick up a print of this sometime.

I'm curious as to how you did the scale pattern? I love the subtlety, and the consistency is great. But yeah, I'm such a sucker for that kind of realism in fantasy. Dragons are kind of easy because there's so much reference one can pull from, but I'd love to see a realistic and believable naga or mermaid or any kind of other more fantastical critters.

Yeah, same here! I'm always trying to puzzle out the possible anatomy of fantasy creatures, even though it's sort of an exercise in insanity. ;) I think I like seeing such tricky, nebulous problems tackled in a very scientific, logical way.

I think I got the scale pattern from CGtextures. If I remember correctly it was a smallish section of snake skin which I copied and pasted (while using a soft eraser to make the edges of each section less abrupt) until I had a large block of it. Then I think I set it to overlay, lowered the opacity, and made a layer mask to Hide All. And then I just painted the scales into the areas where I wanted them to show up. I added small details and highlights manually.
